Why a permanent EleHalo system beats a last-minute setup
Portable sprinklers, a €5,000–10,000 contractor install, or a permanent system you fit yourself. What each one actually costs you in money, minutes and risk.
There are three realistic ways to keep water on a house in wildfire country. You can improvise on the day with garden sprinklers and hoses. You can pay a contractor between €5,000 and €10,000 for a custom-installed sprinkler system with a pump, a tank and a controller. Or you can install a permanent, sized system yourself and leave it mounted year-round. This article is about why we built EleHalo as the third option, and where it is genuinely better — as well as where it is not.
Start with cost, because it decides what most people actually end up with. A custom install is engineered and it works, but the price puts it out of reach for the majority of houses in fire-prone areas, and it usually arrives with an annual service contract. An improvised setup is cheap, perhaps €100–300 of sprinklers and hose, but you are paying in a different currency: it only exists if you are home, calm and have the time. EleHalo sits deliberately in between — a few hundred euros of parts, self-installed, with no labour bill and no service subscription.
The second advantage is the one that matters most on the day: setup time. A permanent system has none. The tube is already clipped along the roof edges, the nozzles are already aimed, the tap connector is already fitted. Turning it on is one action. A portable setup takes 30 to 90 minutes of dragging hoses, positioning sprinklers and guessing at coverage, and that is exactly the window in which the air is full of smoke, the wind has picked up and you should be making decisions about leaving, not about hose routing.
Third: remote start. The optional remote module lets you start, stop and schedule the system from your phone, so the house can be wetted when nobody is on the property — which, if you have followed the advice to leave early, is precisely the situation you want covered. One module per tap, matched automatically by the configurator. A portable setup has no equivalent; a custom install usually offers a wired controller that still assumes someone on site or a fixed network.
Fourth: coverage that is calculated rather than guessed. The configurator traces your actual roof and perimeter on a satellite image and sizes the layout against one hard rule — a maximum of 50 nozzles and 50 m of tube per tap. Nozzles sit at one per metre along roof edges, alternating between the roof surface and the underside, and one per 1.5 m along perimeter runs pointing outward. If your building needs more than one tap can carry, the layout is split across taps automatically. Improvised sprinklers leave blind spots by nature: they cover the middle of a roof well and the edges, gutters and fixtures — where embers actually collect — badly.
Fifth: pressure that stays honest. Misting nozzles only atomise properly above a certain flow, and every extra nozzle on a line takes from the same budget. The 50-per-tap cap exists so the last nozzle on the run still sprays like the first, at roughly 25 L/min from an ordinary domestic tap. A long improvised line of sprinklers loses pressure as it goes, and the far end quietly stops doing anything useful. A custom install solves the same problem by adding a pump and a tank, which is effective and is a large part of why it costs what it costs.
Sixth, and easy to overlook: nobody has to climb a roof during an emergency. Installation happens once, on a calm day, with a ladder and time. That is a completely different risk profile from carrying a sprinkler up wet tiles while the wind is turning — which is how a meaningful number of people get injured before a fire even arrives.
Seventh: it disappears when it is not needed. 16 mm tube clipped along an edge line reads as trim from the ground, and the garden hose that bridges a tap to the roof comes in six colours — black recycled, anthracite, limemint, greige, sandy stone and rose — chosen to blend into a facade rather than announce themselves. An improvised setup looks improvised, and a contractor install leaves visible heads and plumbing.
Eighth: next season costs you almost nothing. Preparation is a flush test at the start of fire season, a look at each nozzle to check it turns and holds its angle, and a scan for UV-damaged tube. There is no rebuilding from scratch and no paid service visit. The system you tested in spring is the same system that is already in place in August.
Now the honest part, because it is the part that matters. A wetting system is designed to reduce ignition vulnerability: it pre-wets vulnerable exterior surfaces, helps suppress landed embers and low-intensity spot fires, and adds an active layer on top of defensible space and home hardening. It is not a guarantee that a house survives a wildfire. It will not hold a running crown fire, it does not replace clearing vegetation, and it never replaces leaving when you are told to leave. A custom-installed system with a tank and pump has more capacity than we do; what it does not have is a price most households can say yes to.
The case for EleHalo is not that it is the most powerful system money can buy. It is that it is permanently in place, correctly sized for your specific roof, startable from your phone, invisible for eleven months of the year, and affordable enough that it actually gets installed. Protection that exists beats protection that would have been better.
